Francesca Maria.
A Champion's Preemie Baby Diary.
Part 7: Back Home in Miami.
Welcome to my site www.francesca07.com. My name is Francesca Maria, I was born on April 22, 2007, a 29-week premature baby (preemie), weighing only 1.46 kilos (3 lbs. 3 oz.). This is part 7 of my diary, when at the age of a little over 9 months I flew back home from Europe with my parents (see buttons on right links to previous parts).

April 22: My Birthday in a Plane.
Yes I'm like those executive always on a place, so here I am on the day of my 1st birthday flying across the ocean. Luckily I already had a pre-birthday party at home a couple days ago, and my parents promised me another birthday party as soon as we get to Europe, I look forward to that. The plane ride was fine, they gave me a French bread baguette, which I ate entirely, and I had a few toys with me, so no problems at all. The only problem is that I barely fit in that bassinet they give babies at the front of the plane, I am afraid next time I fly it won't be so comfortable to sleep.
Tomorrow I will continue my diary from Europe on a different web page, this section is already quite long, time to start a new chapter of my life: Spring in Europe.

April 21: My First Birthday Party!
My first birthday party was a blast, thanks for everyone for coming. Our whole patio was pink, filled with balloons and party items, my parents even surprised me with a large banner on the wall congratulating me, cool! I got great presents. My Mom even made me another cake, and helped me blow the candle. My very nice nanny Jacquie gave me a tiny taste of both cakes, delicious!

April 20 (PM): Crazy Hair.
My Mom saw on the web (thanks to Google Alerts) that there was a baby photo contest, with theme "crazy hair", and so she promptly took a picture of me right after my bath, before I brush my hair, and submitted it. But after she sent the photo, she saw that for people to vote for my photo, they have to register first to disney.com, which is not a good policy, and so unless you are already members of disney.com, no need to vote for it, I see some babies alreay have over 70 votes, it's too tough to catch up with them, especially with the login barrier.

April 20: One last time at the Beach.
We're leaving to Europe in two days, so I loved the opportunity today to go to the beach, it was such a nice day!

April 19: My Birthday Week is starting.
Don't get me wrong, it's not my birthday yet. My birthday will only be on the 22nd of April, in 3 days. But since I have friends and family all over the world, my parents and I have decided to celebrate not one day (I will be on the airplane most of that day), but over the whole week, and in 4 countries (USA, CH, F, RU) to give me a chance to meet everybody. In the photos below I am testing my birthday attire, quite nice is it not?

April 18: Great Presents from Elena.
I got a box full of presents today, mailed from Washington, DC. It included a nice card, an enormous flag, a sweet doll, a wooden toy and a wonderful sweater that I will certainly use during my trip to Europe next week. Thanks, I will make good use of everything!

April 15: Soaked by a Dolphin.
I was frightened at first, we were looking at a dolphin show, admiring them doing all kinds of tricks, jumping high in the air, and suddenly, a dolphin came close to us, jumped and... splashed so much we were all wet, including our video and photo equipment. Well after awhile we laughed about it, no big deal, actually fun! I hope my Dad's camera is not broken, we'll let it dry for a day and it should be fine.

April 15: Seaquarium (continued).
Lots of photo opportunities at Seaquarium, I even got a chance to sit on an alligator, I was not afraid at all. Have a look at the bottom right photo, you see, at any opportunity, I stand up, holding myself with only one hand. I think I should soon start to walk, it's kind of primitive to be crawling all the time, although I do like to be carried by my parents most of the time...

April 15: Seaquarium.
Today we went to Miami's Seaquarium, and I liked it very much. First of all because babies up to 2 years old enter free, but also because I loved the fish so much. I could have stayed there for hours looking at them.

April 14: I love New York.
My parents came back from New York today, and they brought me several presents, among which a nice pink t-shirt and a pocket bag (see photo below). The only problem is that the pocket bag is so small, I can hardly put all my toys in it, I think that for all my toys I'd rather need a few very large suitcases...

April 11-13: I'm visiting family.
I'm staying over at Mima's house for 3 nights while my parents visit the Big Apple for work. I like it here, my aunts Lala and Julie make me laugh with their stories and funny faces, and Mima lets me crawl wherever I please and gives in to all my wishes. But I miss my parents, I hope they come back soon.
April 10: Me, Naked?
It was time for me to be weighed again today, as I will soon be flying back to Europe, and technically I should not weigh more than 10 kilos to be able to sleep in the airplane basket. Well, I do weigh a little more than 10 kilos, but I hope the steward won't notice and interrupt my sleep, I think those baskets have some reserve and 250 grams won't make a difference.

April 9: A nice necklace.
Don't you like my necklace? Well I have a surprise for you, it's not a real necklace, it's printed on my shirt, is that not cool?

April 4: The nicest Top Model.
Today I was honored to meet a real top model, her name is Lana Vladi. Her 21st birthday will be in 2 days and she already has a terrific modeling career, constantly fying from New York to Paris to Milano to Miami and more, she works so much, very impressive. I did not know what to expect at first, but soon realized she's the sweetest person I have ever met, and I truly hope I will see her again, together with her Mom, whom my Dad knows very well.

April 3: Another virus :-(.
Last night I slept very badly, during the night I was really hot with temperature, and my parents had to take me again to the pediatrician to find out what's going on. The doctor said it's some kind of virus, but not the flu, so he did not prescribe me the usual Tamiflu (which made me feel better the last two times I was sick last month and the month before). He told me that Baby Tylenol every 4 hours taken as needed to bring down my temperature should do the trick. I sure hope so, I'm fed up with these viruses.
April 2: Handpaint Masterpiece.
My Mom got me a present: a fingerpaint set. At first I thought it was cool to paint with one's finger, but then I realized it's not so efficient to paint with only one finger at a time. Below you will see my first creation, painted all at once with my hand.

March 31: Beach photos.
I forgot to show you the photos we took two days ago, in the late afternoon of March 29, on the beach and in the park close to our home. I hope you like them, I had a great time on the beach playing with the sand and the plants. You can click on the photos to see them larger. March 30: My Mom's Trophy.
Today I got up at 5:30 AM to go and support my Mom at our local 5K race, together with my Dad and my Grandma. There were over 3,000 runners and my Mom did great, completing the race in just over 22 minutes. She got a nice 1st place prize for her age category. I was so happy because she let me play with her trophy, I liked that very much.

March 29: Beach and Sand Video!
Today my parents let me play on the beach, it was the first time in my life I was able to crawl around and get all covered with sand. I'm not convinced I like the taste of sand, but everything else was fun. I hope we'll go back often to the beach, it sure beats staying in my playpen.

March 27: Related to a Conquistador?
Today I did a lot of crawling. My parents seem to have trouble to keep me in one place, as soon as they look the other way I make my move. Well during one of those escapades, I ran across a book in the corridor about a famous 16th century conquistador, called Sebastian de Belalcázar, to whom I was told I am directly related. I was quite impressed, and it made me feel quite important. I put on my guayabera-style outfit and asked my Dad to take a couple of photos of me with the Colombian colors surrounding me. It made me feel even more important than usual...

March 22: I'm 11 months old today
I'm 11 months old today, it's my last monthly birthday before I turn one. For next month's big event I heard my parents talking about some big plans, but they asked me not to talk about them here on the site, too early. You will all find out in due time.
March 21 (PM): It's so interesting from up here.
Tomorrow is my 11th month birthday, and I am proud to say I have mastered the standing up in my crib level. I am ready to move on to tougher challenges.

March 21 (AM): Self-Service.
My Dad, who is taking care of me at night while my Mom is away, figured out a way for him not to get up when I am thirsty, in the middle of the night. He simply puts a bottle of water on the side of my bed (photo on the left). Then, when I wake up thirsty, I simply stand up like a big girl, take the bottle and can drink and fall back asleep. Today I slept till 8 AM, then I stood up again, and started to bang on the side of the bed to wake up my Dad, it was time for breakfast.

March 19: My Mom is on a Business Trip.
My Mom left for a short business trip, and she promised to be back by Sunday. I'm staying home with my Dad, which should be quite fun I am sure. I don't worry so much, because my Dad always reads me the SMS my Mom sends me, and we communicate on the phone and on Skype quite regularly. The world is quite a small place nowadays thanks to technology.

March 17: Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I hope all babies were dressed in green today, especially all babies for whom it's their first St. Patrick's Day. I certainly was and got lots of compliments for my green outfit. My clothes went very well with my gray-greeen eyes and light hair, with some red tones. I'm not sure yet what my final eye and hair color will be, but today I felt quite Irish, indeed. Below in a photo which was taken specially to congratulate all my fellow Irish baby friends.

March 16: An Egg Hunt only for me.
I have been depressed these days. All over the place I see notices for baby egg hunts, but they all are for babies starting at 1 or 2 years old. And I am only almost 11 months old, so I am excluded. I told my parents, and they offered to make an egg hunt only for me. It was great, and I found all the eggs, they were all hidden under my buddy the big bunny. I liked that!

March 14: Another virus. Bummer.
I'm definitely not lucky, I caught another virus, and it's been two days my temperature has been higher than usual. We went to see my pediatrician this morning, and he told us it's the same old story again, during flu season, not to be surprised to catch various types of viruses. So he sent me home with the same bottle of "Tamiflu" I took last time I was sick, and told me the best was to rest and take frequent baths to bring down my temperature.
In the photo below you can see me with my friend the Tinylove sheep, and wearing the hat my aunt Julie gave me. Quite nice, I may say, it goes perfectly well with my blue sweater.

March 10 (again): I can stand. Kinda.
Yes below it is indeed me, standing on my bed. That's pretty cool, huh? I certainly think so. OK, I still need some help to stand up and my parents should be close in case I lose my balance. But on the photos I sure make it look as it's easy. And note my earring that I got put in this morning.

March 10 (PM): Sam's Club. Huge. Cheap.
Today we went shopping to an enormous shop called "Sam's Club". Everything is so large in that shop, amazing. Mustard comes in gallon packages (3.8 liters), most everything is sold per case. And the prices are wonderful. Look at the first photo, they sell packs of 48 "AA" batteries (useful for my toys) for only $15.63, that's just about 10 euros at today's exchange rate, approximately 5 times cheaper than I was last able to buy them in Europe. And the store is so large that I fell asleep in the middle of it...

March 10 (AM): Ouch! Ear Piercing hurts!
A few days ago my Mom asked me if I wanted to wear earrings, and I said "why not?", as most latino babies I see around here seem to have them. Then my parents made an appointment with the pediatrician, and only today I realized why, they had to make a hole in my ear first! Well thank God the pediatrician was very professional, and it only hurt for a tenth of a second, after which I felt quite well. I will ask my Dad to take a photo of me tonight so you can see how my ears look now.

March 8 (AM): 21:31 minutes for 5K.
I am so proud of my Mom. This morning, bright and early, just after my breakfast, we drove to Miami Beach to participate in the Ocean Drive 2008 5K Race, where over 1,700 persons participated. I stayed in my stroller, observing how my Mom obtained the brilliant result of 21 minutes 31 seconds for the five kilometers, which gave her 1st place in her 20-24 age category, and 7th overall among all women. She took me up on stage with her to receive her trophy, I was so happy! Well done, Mom!

Look at me 8 1/2 months ago (left) and look at me now (right), I have grown about 5 times in weight. I hope I don't continue to grow this fast, or else I might break my parents back and they won't be able to carry me anymore.

March 4: I know how to crawl!!
Finally I seem to have figured it out, crawling is not so complicated after all. I'm still a little awkward, but I can get to where I want to go if I please. Now moving the TV remote control or the phone out of reach will not stop me, I will eventually get them in my mouth. By the way, I think I have a tooth which is slowly coming out, it's really sharp to the touch.
March 3 (PM): Crocs.
After my terrible morning, my parents decided to cheer me up, and we went downtown to do some shopping. I found some charming little pink shoes called crocs, I'm sure that when I start walking they will look perfect on me.

March 3 (AM): So disappointed and upset.
Today started really badly. We had signed up and paid for the "Mommy and Me" baby swimming lessons at the Key Biscayne Community Center almost a month ago, and today was the great day, I put on a nice new bathing suit and we went to the Community Center. There, the reception coldly directed us to the pool, and there we waited for what seemed an eternity... nobody came, no other babies, no teacher. We went back to the reception, and only after some minutes were they able to get hold of the teacher who said that they need 3 babies to hold a class, and so they cancelled it. And neither the teacher nor the Community Center thought about calling us to let us know. Very unprofessional. I will write an angry letter to the Community Center and ask for my money back, it's very bad to upset babies, especially web-savvy babies. Now everybody who Googles Mommy & Me and Key Biscayne Community Center will know how badly the Community Center treated me, that will teach them a lesson.
March 2: Ben and Ana the Japanese.
My Mom and Dad took me today to a Japanese restaurant with a strange name. The cook was so funny and made everything on the table in front of us. Let me reassure you I only drank the milk I had brought with me, it seems Japanese food is a little too salty and greasy for my taste as of now, maybe in a few years I'll start to like it.

March 1: My new car seat.
I'm a big girl now and so my parents upgraded my rear-looking car seat to a front-looking seat. It's much more interesting now as I can see where we are driving. Of course I don't look all the time, I usually like to sleep in the car.

February 28 (PM): An interesting old video.
I helped my Dad clean up his office today and we ran across an old video his dad had filmed a long, long time ago. I enjoyed watching it, it shows 3 happy kids at the beach. Yes you guessed right, the little boy is my dad and the two little girls are my aunts. Cool!

February 27: I need to keep my ears warm.
Today in Miami it's a little colder than usual, the temperature went down to +10 C (that's around 50 F), so I put on my head-band, that way I will keep warm. By the weekend the weather should get back to normal, I want to go back swimming in the pool, I need to practice for next week's "Mommy & Me" swimming class.

I was shocked looking at the photos below of me and my Mom, it's hard to believe that was me 7 months ago in the picture to the left. I am now much bigger. Good I switched to a vegetable and fruit diet or else I am afraid I would break the table in 7 more months.

I'm 10 months old today, two months from my big First birthday. How appropriate that just today I found out there was a baby photo contest on the web, so I rushed to upload one of my photos, I am allowed to upload 6 of them in total. I'm in the 10-12 month baby category, so wish me luck! February 20: Double Fun Grocery Shopping.
My Mom knows I like to go shopping for groceries, sitting in the front of the cart with my legs hanging. I will now always take it with me when I go shopping.

February 19 (again): Swinging is cool!
A couple days ago my Mom showed me the blog of a baby exactly one month younger than me, and also called Francesca (!) but living in Seattle, and in the entry for February 17 her parents write about Francesca's first experience on a swing. I thought it was incredible that I had never been on a swing, being much older than she is (by a whole month), so I begged my parents to take me to a baby swing, which they did, of course (they do everything I ask, they are very well trained). At first I was not sure about it, but in 2 minutes I started loving it, it's a wonderful sensation! I hope my parents will take me back to the swing as soon as possible, I really enjoyed it.

My parents took me to the beach today with my stroller. So we walked back home via a big residential complex and took some pictures there.

February 15: I'm sick :-(.
What a terrible day I had today. I woke up with a temperature of approximately 101 F which is approx. 38.3 C, and it did not go down. Even though it's not so much my parents got worried (it's the first time of my life I have temperature) and took me to the doctor, who said I had a virus and prescribed baby Tylenol every 4 hours for 2 days and 2.5 ml of Tamiflu twice a day for 5 days. Happily by night I felt much better.
February 14 (PM): VSD. The Apple Store.
Today we had to go to the cardiologist, for a checkup. My parents helped me dress up in my Valentine's clothes, and I must say I looked great, everybody in the doctor's office complimented me. As for the doctor, he said my VSD has greatly improved and that he hopes in 6 months or so, as my heart grows, it will have totally disappeared and he will be able to discharge me.
After that, we went to the Mall. Of course we visited first one of my favorite stores - The Apple Store. I was impressed by the new very thin MacBook Air, so light even a baby could hold it with one hand. I'd love to have one, but my Dad seems to want to get one for himself first. So I guess I will settle for a game I saw on display called "Green Eggs and Ham".

February 14: Happy Valentine's Day!!
Since today's my first Valentine's Day, it's quite important for me to do it right. I want to wish a wonderful Valentine's day to all the people who are close to me and love me and whom I love, my parents, grand-parents, great-grand-parents, aunts, cousins, my godparents, and many friends I have across the globe. I also wish a great day to all babies of this world who stumble upon my diary, and for them I have included as a gift the images below, a nice Valentine Teddy bear, and a drawing which represents me on this great day. I will ask my parents today to photograph me in my Valentine outfit, I hope to post it asap.

February 13: My bath.
What can I say, I sure love to take baths in the evenings. It's just a little uncomfortable for my Mom, she has to get into the bathtub so she can wash me. But there is an advantage, when I splash, most of the water stays in the big bathtub.

February 12: Healthy Food.
Following my pediatrician's recommendation to switch to mostly vegetables and fruits, my Mom got me a couple baby cookbooks, and we started to study them. In fact I am not very picky. I have a preference for peas, I don't like so much spinach and beans, and most of all I prefer when my Mom cooks, that tastes better than the little baby jars one can buy in the stores.

February 11: My Pediatrician.
Finally Monday and we can take care of some business. First we got rid of that Apnea Monitor that they forced me to be connected to at night since they discharged me from NICU. I think for me it was useless, but maybe it gave some peace of mind to my parents so they could sleep better. Now I have a simple motion detector under my mattress and it does the same job without those cords. Good riddance!
Then we went to see my pediatrician, whom I like very much, he had seen me last time in August of last year, when I was approximately 4 months old and about 4 kilos, now I am close to 10 months and about 10 kilos, that's superb progress, I am now in the 85% percentile, having caught up with more than half the world's babies in weight and size. So after the good news, the doctor told me it was great time to pay closer attention to my diet, which should include 8 servings of vegetables and 5 servings of fruit daily. He told me that cereals, potatoes and fruit juices should be avoided, and I should cut my milk intake to only two times a day. A pity, I like milk so much. Well, as long as they keep giving me fruit desserts, I'll be fine...
February 10: The Warmest Pool.
Today Sunday we went to the pool, and I had my first swim ever. I was amazed, the pool was practically as warm as my evening bath water, close to 98 degrees fahrenheit. I was told that pools were cold, but that's not true, at least not for the one at our complex. They must have let the warm water flow in too long, well I did not mind, it was perfect for me. In fact I liked the pool so much that I asked my parents to sign me up for baby swimming lessons at the Community Center called "Mommy & Me", they will be twice a week for 4 weeks, I am looking forward to that. The only thing is that I will have to have a bathing suit and special swimming diapers, a good excuse to go shopping, great.

February 9 (PM): Lunch with Mutzi.
Tiotia Lala's dog, Mutzi, is a wonderful dog. His real name is Sebastien but I prefer to call him Mutzi. He even licked me in the face a few times, that felt a little funny, but I liked it. He is so nice, he even allowed me to sit on his back a few seconds, that was great!

February 9 (AM): A Trip to the Supermarket.
The shopping carts in Miami are great, and perfect for babies to ride in. I hope my parents take me shopping as often as possible.

February 8: The View from my Window.
We had a superb view from our airplane window. First we flew right above Paris, then many hours later the Bahamas. After that our approach into Florida was delayed, it seems the Miami airport had above it the only thunderstorm of the day, and so we had to circle a few times in the air. Thank God, in warm climates, rain is usually quite fast and 30 minutes later we passed the island of Key Biscayne (see photo) and started our descent. Let me just add I was upset with the immigration officer, he took a long time to let us pass, they must have had a malfunctioning computer or something.

February 8, 2008: Transatlantic Flight.
I love to fly in airplanes. The seats are very comfortable (for small persons), and they even gave me a real bed attached to the wall for taking naps. The only sad thing is that the bed says that it is limited to babies of 10 kilos, and I am now right around that weight, which means that it will probably be my last trip with the free bed, next time I'll have to sit in a chair like everybody else.
